NVIDIA Bets $25 Billion on Open-Source AI to Fight DeepSeek

NVIDIA is increasing its investment in open-source artificial intelligence. Its portfolio company, Reflection, is reportedly looking to raise $2.5 billion at a $25 billion valuation, with JPMorgan Chase among the potential investors. This funding round would be a major jump from NVIDIA’s earlier investment of about $800 million in the startup. It shows the company’s commitment to building a strong domestic rival to the rising influence of Chinese AI developers worldwide.

The strategy is straightforward. Reflection focuses on creating and sharing open-source AI models that anyone can download and modify. This approach has helped Chinese developers like DeepSeek gain global market share. DeepSeek and similar companies succeed by offering flexible, affordable open models, even though these models are not as powerful as the best American closed systems. However, open models appeal to developers and businesses looking for flexibility and lower costs.

NVIDIA’s response extends beyond a single investment. The chip NVIDIA is doing more than just making one investment. The company leads the Nemotron Coalition, an industry group that brings together open-source model developers to create a strong American AI alternative. The goal is to narrow the international lead that Chinese open-source development has built. This move shows that the U.S. tech sector now sees the open-source space, not just model performance, as a key area in the global AI race. China’s strategic push is to build a domestic ecosystem of open AI models running on Chinese-manufactured chips. These models are designed for international export. This push represents a direct threat to Nvidia’s hardware dominance and the commercial ecosystem built around it. A credible, high-performance American open-source alternative,e supported by Nvidia’s infrastructure and capital,l could meaningfully slow that penetration in key international markets.

NVIDIA’s stock slipped in premarket trading on Thursday, as did other semiconductor stocks. For traders and fintech investors watching AI infrastructure, the Reflection funding round is a clear sign of the growing competition between American and Chinese AI development. It also shows that NVIDIA is ready to invest heavily to maintain its leadership in the industry.
